- If someone loves you, if they really, really love you, hold on to them with everything you’ve got. This doesn’t have to be romantic love, it can be your best friend, your mother, your cat, absolutely whoever - you have no idea how much someone means to you until they’re gone, so try to make sure you never have to realise it.
- Sometimes, it’s actually okay to tell people to get fucked. You don’t have to be sunshine and rainbows all the time.
- If someone’s treating you like shit, do the same right back to them and kick them the hell out of your life. You do not need to make excuses for anyone, justify their actions to yourself or anyone else, or try to convince yourself that they will change; because they probably won’t. You deserve to be around people who treat you with respect and kindness, so if someone’s falling short of that, say goodbye.
- A lot of the time, people don’t ask for help. It doesn’t mean they don’t need it. Pay attention to the people you care about, and if something doesn’t seem right, it might be because it isn’t. Ask if they’re okay every once in a while and remind them that you’re there for them.
- If someone’s going out of their way to make you feel like shit, it’s because they feel like shit themselves and they’re trying to pull their own ego back up by sticking their claws into yours and dragging it down. Don’t feel bad, just feel sorry for them.
- Always carry a bottle of water around with you.
- Give money to homeless people. Not always, not your whole paycheque, not to rude or dangerous people - just make the effort to make the gesture when you have a few extra bucks to spare. Don’t let people’s selfish “Oh they’ll just spend it on drugs” excuses get into your head, either, just do the good deed and know that you might have fed someone for the day. If it really bothers you what they might spend it on, ask them what it’s for and then go buy them their food/bus ticket/whatever. A little kindness goes a long way in this world.
- ‘Please’ and ‘thankyou’ should be two of the most used words in your vocabulary. It it not hard to be polite, and often simple manners change people’s entire perception of you.
- Going back to the water thing for a second - coke and juice are all well and good, but they can’t be the only thing you drink. I’ve known a lot of people who tried to tell me that a fizzy drink is the same as drinking water and that they ‘never get dehydrated’… They all had terrible skin and suffered from constant headaches. Drink some fucking water, your body will thank you for it.
- Love with everything you have. Do not hold back. Tell the special people in your life how much they mean to you. Kiss your loved ones every chance you get. Say ‘I love you’ as much as you fucking feel like. You don’t know how long you’ll get to say it for.
